Abstract
Following the report into UK Food Assurances schemes in 2002, the Food Standards Agency asked in 2006 for a review of their development against the guidance it produced in 2003. The review started in February 2007 and covers 17 schemes on the UK market, those within the “the Red Tractor” spectrum, Lion Eggs, Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), the feed scheme and SQC, the Scottish combinable crops scheme, as well as schemes aimed at specific markets: the Soil Association, Freedom Food and Leaf Marque.

The objective has been to assess how the schemes have developed since 2002,how far they have adopted the Agency guidelines and to suggest how they might develop in the future in the interest of the consumer. The review has taken into account the 2002 English Commission on Farming and Food recommendations on the revision of governance of Assured Food Standards (AFS) and the restructuring of the Red Tractor schemes. This has enabled AFS to bring substantial improvement to the 10 schemes within its spectrum. This has been very significant for the assurance area.

The report addresses issures of transparency and traceability and provides a good overview of UK FSA development over the past 10 years.
